Slip on the party dress, the acceptable makeup, follow the social norms as you watch life go by.

Sip the sweet red wine, cover the bitter taste of your thoughts and emotions, for they just trouble you now anyways, right?

You're on the sideline now, watching the ball, watching the pretty people waltz by. But, under their glitz and glam, under their masks and makeup, they are so dull and ordinary. Vanilla.

Turning your back to them, you look out at the ebony night, staring out the window, warm breath fogging the glass as your hand reaches out, wanting to be one with the night, be away from the forced social ritual.

Take another sip.

The wine is sweet, soothing, and distracts from what wanders around you and in your mind. You'll have to get another glass, should you continue at this pace.

Running a hand down your dress, the bodice and layers of skirts stifling and almost unbearable here. This party, the air is too hot, tense, filled with expectation as they glance at you from time to time. The people.

They wonder idly, what is to become of that wall flower?

You just sigh and smirk lightly, smiling when needed, and raise the crystal rim to your dry lips once more to drink.

At this point, you do not care what they think. Well...secretly, deep down you do, you crave to be accepted. Yet, at this point, you don't want to blend in with the vanilla crowd before you, you don't want to pick a random partner who is sweet and kind, yet inane and can barely keep up with you.

No, no that won't do anymore.

Closer friends, the ones that really know you, know the you that wants to go out in the night and relax in the cool breeze that lies there, they tell you to be patient. That this isn't a sprint, but a marathon.

You affectionately point out that you don't want to sprint, but merely...want someone to walk with.

Sighing, you are able to finally step out onto the balcony, away yet still accessible to the crowd buzzing behind you, but now you can revel in the cool breezes and dim lighting that surrounds the night.

Too bad that you can barely see what lies out beneath you in this poor lighting.

But, it doesn't matter. You know mystery and the unknown can await you here, and you get a small thrill from that fact. It's better than having to endure the annoyances behind you, now isn't it?

You take one final sip, savor the sweet and bitter mix of tastes in your mouth, and smile a Cheshire grin.

It's only one more party, one more night. The people may mill about, come and go, the night might wax and wane under the moonlight's touch and the sun's arrival, but there is only one constant.

You.
Just a reflective piece on my life right now, love, future, expectations...
